Longford/Westmeath Fine Gael Deputy James Bannon has confirmed that further to a parliamentary question to the Minister for Justice and Equality with regard to the Text Alert Scheme and Community CCTV, a commitment has been made by the Minister and the Garda authorities to examine the feasibility of extending the schemes within the Longford/Roscommon division.

Deputy Bannon, last week, informed the Leader that Minister Alan Shatter has followed up on the matter and that 18 Text Alert areas will be earmarked for review. The areas are: Granard, Mullinalaughta, Drumlish/Ballinamuck, Edgeworthstown, Dromard, Ardagh, Colmcille, Cullyfad, Killoe, Ballinalee, Newtownforbes, Lanesborough, Moydow/Kenagh and Ballymahon.

Commenting, Deputy Bannon said: “Having previously told me of a need to consult with the Garda authorities on the matter, I am delighted that the Minister has followed up on the matter.”

Deputy Bannon said that an extension of the scheme will depend on a number of factors including the availability of funding, the progression of projects already grant aided and overall policy considerations.
