Local eye service fears lessen

Cllr PJ Reilly.

Cllr PJ Reilly.

Anxieties over the future of eye specialist services in Co Longford have eased with the appointment of a temporary physician, it emerged this week.

The HSE confirmed a position at Mullingar’s Midland Regional Hospital for a locum community ophthalmic physician was secured in recent days.

Dealing primarily with priority patients, the HSE said services would be made available one day a week in Longford with a similar arrangement also set aside for Mullingar.

HSE Dublin Mid Leinster Forum member Cllr PJ Reilly said the pledge was a welcome one especially as the hospital hadn’t ruled out extending such cover prior to the return of its permanent staff member.
