Local conference to discuss paths into political life for women
Longford Women’s Link (LWL) will hold a conference next Monday, November 26 at Backstage Theatre, Longford in an effort to explore the opportunities available to women to become more involved in political life and in influencing political life within their communities.
The ‘Paths for Women into Politics & Decision Making’ takes place from 9:30am to 3:45pm, with registration at 9am.
Key note speaker on the day includes Ailbhe Smyth, with Cllr Peggy Nolan providing ‘The Councillor Perspective’ aspect to proceedings. In relation to the discussions on ‘Networks and Contacts in the Community’, Editor, Longford Leader and Dundalk Democrat, Sheila Reilly and Cllr Rose Conway Walsh, Mayo County Council will both speak on this issue, while Tess Murphy, LWL and Cllr Sally Ann Flanagan, Tuam Town Council will provide input into the theme ‘Power in the Community’.
The afternoon session will explore the ‘Path for Women’ in more detail and includes speakers
Séan Dorgan, General Secretary, Fianna Fáil; Eamon Ryan, Leader, Green Party; Deputy Regina Doherty, TD (FG); Kirsi Hanifin, Women and Equality Officer, Labour and Caoilfhionn Ni Dhonnabhain, Sinn Fein Director of Politics for the 26 counties.
There will be a dedicated Networking Room on the day, allowing participants ample opportunity and time to network. The Networking Room will contain stands from organisations working on increasing women’s political participation, including the Women’s Manifesto Project, the National Women’s Council, Women for Election, The Countess Markievicz School, etc. RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org by November 21, 2012.
