Larry Cunningham to appear on Nationwide

Longford singing sensation Larry Cunningham will appear in the popular RTE show Nationwide in a special show on Longford.

Larry Cunningham will feature in a ten minute segment about Larry and the success of his book, 'Larry Cunningham - A Showband Legend'. The show will air on Wednesday, March 24 next on RTE1 at 7 pm. The interview, which is undertaken by journalist Mary Fanning, takes place in Larry's home near Granard and also features his wife Beatrice.

The filming culminated at a sold out concert by Larry, Louise Morrissey and John Hogan at the Ardhowen Theatre in Enniskillen. Showbiz priest Fr Brian D'arcy and Tom Gilmore who wrote Larry's book, will also be featured on the episode.

Over the years Larry Cunningham has become one of the best known performers from Longford since he had his first number one record about a neighbouring county, 'Lovely Leitrim' in the mid-1960s. Larry's legendary career started as a singer with the Grafton Showband from Gowna around 1960.

In 1961 he became lead vocalist for the newly formed Mighty Avons at the start of the showband era. He was the star of the band from its inception until his departure in late 1969. He later went on to work with the Blue Boys which soon became 'Larry Cunningham and his Country Blue Boys.'

The Mullinalaghta man was the first Irish based artist to reach the UK Pop Charts and his 'Tribute to Jim Reeves' spent over three months in the top 20 British charts and sold over 250,000 copies.

He is still on the road today touring Ireland and the UK with his unique style of country music.
