Lanesboro ATM to be retained

A campaign to retain the ATM at the National Irish Bank branch in Lanesboro has proven to be successful after officials at the bank confirmed that they will accommodate the cash service in the town "for a minimum of five years".

Currently, the facility is located at their branch, which will close in May this year. The 24-hour ATM machine was also due to close with the banking facility, but following a strong argument put forward by local representatives, the bank officials have agreed to retain the cash machine facility in the town.

In a statement to the Leader, a spokesperson said, "National Irish Bank can confirm that it will retain an ATM in Lanesboro after its branch in the town closes. The Bank intends to locate the ATM so that it offers 24 hour access to the public. National Irish Bank has commenced the process of identifying a suitable location for the ATM which will be subject to the usual planning approval requirements."

Speaking to the Leader, Cllr Mark Casey welcomed the news.

"They intend to locate the ATM so that it offers 24-hour access to the public for a minimum period of five years and the position to be reviewed after that.

"At the meeting, we realised that he bank was going to close because it was corporate decision, but one thing I was pushing for was the ATM, and I got the full backing of the councillors there," said Cllr Casey, referring to Cllrs Sean Farrell, Mick Cahill and Alan Mitchell, who attended the meeting with the NIB officials.

He explained that as a tourist town, Lanesboro needed a 24-hour ATM. "We have an ATM in our local SuperValu but it's closed at 10pm. We're a cash-based society and with the tourism we needed access to an ATM."

Cllr Casey said that given that it the situation is only guaranteed for five years, he said he has been in contact with other banks and has received positive response from two of those.

In terms of the future location of the ATM, should the NIB branch be sold, Cllr Casey said there are plenty of secure locations available in the town.
