Gun attack car found burnt out

Gardai are continuing to investigate the firing of gunshots into an occupied house in Longford town on Friday morning. The car which was used in the incident was found burnt out in the Edgeworthstown area later that day.

Several gunshots were fired into the house in the Ardnacassa area of Longford town in the early hours of Friday morning last. At around 6.20am, a male was seen fleeing the scene after discharging a gun three times through the front window of the house near the Department of Social Welfare offices.

Witnesses then reported seeing the perpetrator making his escape in a silver Mondeo vehicle which was parked near to the house.

No-one was hurt during the incident but there is speculation that the incident was part of ongoing problems between two Co Longford families. The house was sealed off for several hours on Friday morning while the Gardai carried out a technical examination of the scene.

On Friday afternoon investigating Gardai found the silver vehicle used in the incident, in a burnt-out state in the Edgeworthstown area. This led to a follow-up search of a house in a housing estate in Edgeworthstown.

According to the Longford Gardai no-one has been arrested at this stage and the matter is under active investigation. However it is believed that attempts are being made to get both sides involved in the incident to talk through a mediator.

The Gardai are still appealing for witnesses with any relevant information to come forward and contact Longford Garda Station on 043 33 46741.
