Green shoots for new garden club in Co Longford

A new garden club, for both amateur and professional, is about to be established in Longford and its organiser is inviting new members to join.

Organised by Killashee man, Ciaran O'Hea, the club aims to bring together like-minded people with varying levels of interest and knowledge in gardening.

"The idea is to bring together a bunch of people once a month to share information and also to come along and listen to guest speakers," said Ciaran speaking to the Longford Leader. "There's a club in Athlone and Ballinasloe but there's nothing in Longford."

In addition to sharing information, Ciaran would like to see the venture develop into a co-operative one where if someone had a garden project that was daunting in size for one person, then others could come along and help.

"It would be a case that a group of willing amateurs would come together to help each other with their projects," said Ciaran.

Ciaran, who moved to Killashee three and a half years ago, believes that there are many reasons to become a gardener.

"The reasons could be economic, medical or just for the sheer pleasure of it," he said. "It is a great hobby to have. From an economic perspective you can feed a family quite easily and it's not that difficult either. I have a poly tunnel since July and already I am giving away tomatoes, peppers and chilli's.

"It's also a great alternative to the rubbish on the television. It's great being out in the fresh air. The important thing to remember though is not to take on more than you can chew. Simply do it in manageable easy chunks."

Ciaran is aiming to hold the first meeting of the Longford Garden Club at the end of November and according to the enthusiastic Killashee gardener, now is the best time to get started on your garden.

"This is the best time of the year to start planting and moving shrubs. There is a lot of work to be done over the next four or five months. This is the time to start planting winter vegetables that come up in the spring time," he said.

Ciaran, who is a native of Galway, is hoping that those interested in gardening, either professional or amateur, will contact him to express their interest in the club.

"I would hope that this would strike a cord with all gardeners in Longford. All are welcome. It is a great forum where we can pass on what we know to each other. I'm hoping for a very good response," he said.

If you would like to become involved in the Longford Garden Club, please contact Ciaran O'Hea on 085-1355990 or email: longfordgardenclub@gmail.com
