Granard road gets set for new lease of life

A major regeneration of Granard’s Trumra Road is about to begin, it emerged during a special housing meeting of Longford County Council last week.
The Department of Environment, Community, Heritage and Local Government has approved the appointment of a contractor to carry out the “remedial works”on the estate, which the Leader understands will commence later this month.
Brendan Sammon Ltd, Aughnasheelin, Co Leitrim was awarded the Trumra Road contract. Works are expected to take approximately 18 months to complete and will cost in the region of €1.55m.
“The number of dwellings included in this scheme is 41 – 33 rented and eight private,” Barry Lynch, Head of Finance, Longford County Council added.
“The works will comprise minor refurbishment and decorative works to 23 occupied local authority units, demolition and new build of one single storey semi-detached bungalow, refurbishment and new extensions to two units; complete refurbishment of six derelict and vacant units, refurbishment and decorative works to one house and decorative and enhancement works to the external of eight provately owned units.”
The regeneration also incorporates associated site works which includes watermain replacement, pipework directional drilling operations and new service connections to 22 houses.
“Storm drain and foul sewer enhancement works including trenchless repairs to sewers, replacement boundary treatment works, upgrade and replacement external fuel stores, replacement footpaths, new parking spaces, public lighting upgrade and all other associated and estate works will also be carried out.”
Local area representative for the Granard area, Cllr PJ Reilly (FF) said that he welcomed developments at Trumra Road, and he paid tribute to the those who remained dedicated to the cause.
“I want to welcome this – it is long overdue and a lot of work has been put into this by the executive of Longford Co Co,” he declared.
“The money for the development of Trumra Road came from the Department and we look forward to the work starting there,” Cllr Frank Kilbride (FG) said.
