Granard mourns Damien Dawson

The entire community of Granard has been plunged into sadness this week, with the untimely death of 39-year-old Damien Dawson, Coolarty, Granard, Co Longford following a road traffic accident at Granardkill in the early hours of last Sunday morning.

Mr Dawson, who was married with two young daughters, had just attended the AGM of his local football club St Mary’s, where he had been elected to the position of assistant treasurer on the committee. He was very well known and highly regarded in the area where he farmed his land and worked as a tradesman. Mr Dawson was just moments from his home when the tragedy struck last weekend and it is understood that he was due to celebrate his 40th birthday in March.

The late Damien Dawson was born and reared in Coolarty, attended the local national school and later enrolled at Cnoc Mhuire in Granard where his aunt, Sr Reena Dawson taught for over thirty years. Kind hearted and generous in all his deeds, Mr Dawson’s death has served as a deep blow to the north Longford area.

His passions in life included his wife Orla; daughters Aoife and Sorcha; mother, Janie and brother Thomas; St Mary’s GAA and his local church. His contribution to the community in which he lived – during his short life – can never be understated.
