Gardai carry out raid on cannabis growing facility

Up to 10,000 worth in cannabis plants were seized by gardai in Edgeworthstown last Thursday, the Leader has learned.

Gardai have described the discovery of up to €10,000 in cannabis plants from a house in Edgeworthstown last week as “extremely sophisticated”.

Weighing equipment, heating utensils and a string of other cannabis production paraphernalia were also seized during the planned raid last Thursday afternoon.

Spearheaded by officers from the Granard/Edgeworthstown area, the seizure is believed to be one of the biggest hoards uncovered by gardai in the wider Co Longford region in recent years.

A Polish national in his late 20s was arrested at the scene when gardai entered the grow house. He was subsequently taken to Longford Garda Station for questioning before being released without charge.

A file is now expected to be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) over the coming days as gardai await direction on the course of any potential forthcoming investigation.

But it is the extent of the operation which has both delighted and surprised gardai in equal measure.

“The whole upstairs of the property was transformed,” said a spokesperson this week. “There was a whole area for keeping the plants dry and there was also another section for cutting, washing and packaging.”

As part of a painstaking surveillance-led undertaking led by Granard and Edgeworthstown gardai, dozens of plants in various stages of growth were also recovered.
