Gardaí appeal for public’s assistance

Gardaí in Longford town are appealing to the public to assist them with their enquiries, following a spate of thefts and criminal damage to property, over the past week. Gardaí are also advising homeowners to exercise vigilance in respect of their properties and to “regularly check” vacant properties as copper and metal thefts continue to rise throughout the county.

On November 17 last, between the hours of 12 midnight and 10am, thieves stripped two homes of their copper fixture and fittings in the Ballymahon area of south Longford.

The houses - numbers 5 and 6, Moycourt, Moyvale, Ballymahon - were broken into via the patio doors after the assailants “smashed in the doors” and entered the houses. “All copper piping and cyclinders were stolen and there was subsequent severe water damage to the homes as a result,” Longford gardaí confirmed to the Leader on Monday. “The scene has been examined, and at this stage we would be appealing to anyone who may have noticed anything suspicious to contact us. We are following a number of lines of inquiry, but are appealing to the public to assist us with those enquiries.”

The Redeemed Christian Church on the Stokestown Road was also targeted by thieves earlier this month. Between the hours of 10pm and 7am on November 13 and 14 last, the door of the facility was “kicked in”, according to garda sources, and a collection box stolen. It is not known exactly how much cash was in the box and gardaí are currently investigating the matter.

On November 17 last, the phone box at the Market Square in Longford town was vandalised at approximately 3:45am, while on November 19, four vans parked at the Eircom Yard on the Ballinalee Road were vandalised. “All the windows were smashed in, on the vans, and a drill was subsequently taken from one of the vehicles in the incident,” a garda spokesperson added. “Once again, we are appealing to those who may have noticed anything suspicious in the area on the night in question, to contact us and help us with our investigations.”
