Garda search after mother and son are attacked in home

Gardai are investigating a serious assault on a mother and son in Longford town on Monday evening.

Gardai are investigating a serious assault on a mother and son in Longford town on Monday evening.

A mother and son were last night (Tuesday) recovering in hospital after being attacked by two men in their home on the outskirts of Longford town.

The pair were attacked with a crowbar at around 9:30pm on Monday night at St Emer’s, just off the Ballinalee Road.

Gardai believe the woman was attacked first as she responded to a knock at her door. Her son, who was also inside, rushed to her aid but was also assaulted before their attackers fled the scene.

Both victims were taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar for treatment for non life-threatening injuries.

No arrests have, as yet, been made but Gardai have appealed for anyone who may have noticed anything untoward in the St Emer’s area at around 9:30pm on Monday evening to contact them at (043) 3346741.

They are also hoping descriptions of the alleged assailants, one of whom was believed to have been wearing a white hoodie will assist them in their enquiries. The other suspect, meanwhile, is described as being around 5’11 in height, of medium to stocky build and wearing black coloured clothing.

In a seperate incident, gardai are also investigating the theft of two engagement rings from a house in the Moigha area of Ballymahon.

Detectives believe thieves gained access to the property by forcing open a window sometime between 9am and 4:30pm on Monday afternoon.

Anyone with information in relation to either of these incidents is asked to contact Longford Garda Station at (043) 3346741.
