Garda patrol car rammed at checkpoint

Two Longford gardaí had a lucky escape after their patrol car was rammed at the Red Cow roundabout on the outskirts of Longford town last Tuesday.

On February 26 last, both officers were conducting a checkpoint when the driver of a vehicle whom they had stopped, suddenly rammed his car into the patrol car, reversed and subsequently fled from the scene.

A high speed chase then ensued through counties Longford and Westmeath and eventually, after one hour, it ended in Knocknavalley in Co Westmeath.

“We were conducting a checkpoint, when the car we had stopped suddently rammed our car, reversed and took off at speed,” a garda spokesperson confirmed to the Leader on Monday. “It resulted in a high speed chase throughout Longford and Westmeath. It was probably an hour later when we came to ground at Knocknavalley in Co Westmeath.”

An investigation into the matter is continuing and a file is currently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
