Garda investigations underway as shots fired
Two separate investigations have been launched in Co Longford after shots were fired at two homes - one outside Longford town and the other in Edgeworthstown – in recent days. Gardai have stressed that the incidents are not related.
It has emerged that dogs were harmed and vehicles damaged during the incident on the outskirts of Longford town in the early hours of last Sunday morning.
“At approximately 2:50am a number of shots were fired at the rear of a private house at Clonturk,” a spokesperson for Longford Gardaí said. “Damage was caused to two cars and two dogs were also injured in the incident. We understand that there were a number of people in the house at the time, however they were not harmed in any way.”
The scene was subsequently cordoned off to make way for a forensic examination of the area. Gardaí are appealing to members of the public who noticed anything suspicious in the area at the time of the incident, to make contact with them.
Meanwhile, gardaí in Granard are continuing to investigate an incident at Lisnannagh, Edgeworthstown in which shots were fired at a family home on the night of Wednesday, March 6, 2013. “We got a report that shots were fired at the home,” a spokesperson for Granard Gardaí told the Leader. “There was no damage caused to the property and nobody was injured in the incident. Gardaí did, however, find pellets at the front door of the proeprty.”
The spokesperson then went on to confirm that the Edgeworthstown incident was related to an ongoing dispute.
“This follows on from a number of incidents and is part of an ongoing Traveller feud in this area,” he added. “A car was burnt out just last week, and on February 17, a man was assaulted.” Gardaí are appealing to the public to assist them with their investigations.
