Future looks Positive for Longford man
A Longford town man, who was forced to wait over two months for Eircom to connect his phone line and panic button, has been given the gift of a free mobile phone by a generous business man living in Mullingar. The Leader revealed in recent weeks that Joe Donlon of Canal Court in Longford, who is in a wheelchair, had fallen outside his home and lay there alone for nearly an hour as his alarm pendant was totally redundant without a phone line.
On reading the article, Niall Lambe, the Director of Future Positive a company which provides easy to use mobile phones for the elderly and those with special needs, decided he wanted to donate a phone to Joe to make sure he was never left feeling isolated again.
He told the Leader, "My girlfriend, Martina Morgan is from Killoe, and her family buys the Leader every week, so it was through her that I saw the article. When I read it I thought the situation was a complete disgrace. It's not right for this man to have to wait so long to have his phone and panic button wired up. That's when I decided I wanted to do something to help."
Niall then explained, "I set up my company when my Dad had a stroke as he was having difficulty using the regular mobile phones supplied in Ireland so I started searching around Europe for products that were easier to use. I discovered the Doro phones in Sweden and I started to source them. I also recently went to the Access and Mobility Trade Show and met with a lot of people with special needs and spoke to them about what they needed in a phone and the feedback with the Doro phones has been terrific."
He continued to say that, "The phones I supply have an SOS button on the back which calls four of your relatives or friends automatically when you press it. When I read Joe had a fall recently I thought this phone would be ideal for him."
Last weekend Niall presented Joe Donlon with his Doro phone mobile phone which is valued at €200 and when connected to a sim card can be used either as a pay as you or bill phone. The phone includes special features such as a large screen for those with sight difficulties and giant buttons for easy dialling, as well as the all important SOS button on the back.
When informed that he would be receiving this generous gift Joe said he was delighted. "I wish to sincerely thank Mr Lambe for his kindness. I was very touched by a stranger who came to my rescue in my time of need when no one else did. It really is an easy to use phone for the older generation or the disabled people of Ireland. To me its like winning the Lotto, I feel a lot safer now thanks to Mr Lambe."
