Fundraiser for Love Laura campaign continues

by Ailbhe Gillespie

Killoe woman, Dolores Kiernan is appealing to people all over Co Longford to sponsor a weight loss challenge she is taking part in to raise funds for Laura Doherty. Laura Doherty was seriously injured in a two car collision in Edgeworthstown earlier this year and the Longford GAA Co Secretary is using this novel challenge as a fundraiser to pay for Laura's physiotherapy. Dolores began changing her diet and introducing daily exercise into her daily routine in recent weeks and it has paid off.

She told the Leader; “I was weighed in recently and I have definitely lost some weight. However I'm keeping how much I weigh now a secret because I'm calling on people to sponsor me and guess how much weight I will have lost by my deadline of April of next year. Figure 8 gym in the N4 Axis Centre has offered me the use of the facilities free of charge and I sincerely thank them for that, it's great to see local business helping out in this great cause. ”

Dolores aims to lose an amazing five stone and she says that so far the fundraising campaign has been a great success. “An awful lot of people have come on board and we are going to distribute 500 sponsorship cards over the coming weeks.”

Dolores's weight loss fundraiser is just one of many planned events to raise funds for Laura Doherty. She commented; “ We are also planning to hold an auction full of very practical items from a fill of oil to bags of coal etc. We are planning to hold that in February so that will give us lots of time to gather the items we'll auction. Declan Nerney has agreed to play for the 'Love Laura' Fund on February 25 next in the Longford Arms Hotel. We will have tickets out after Christmas and we will be looking for support from near and far.”

The Love Laura Committee are currently circulating sponsorship cards to businesses throughout County Longford. If you would like to sponsor Dolores in her weight loss efforts or to get involved in the Love Laura Charity, simply contact Dolores Kiernan on 043 33 41445 or any of the Love Laura Committee members (Peter and Mary Brady, Gary Fenelon and Victor Connell). You can also attend the committee's meeting in Carriglass on Sunday November 29 next at 6.30pm. (Ring 043-33-41445 for directions).

If you would like to sponsor the fund directly the 'Love Laura' bank account is in Bank of Ireland, Granard, the sort code is 90-17-49 and the bank account number is 39841851.
