Five people arrested following chase

Five people were arrested in the Collinstown area today following a number of chases involving local Gardai and the Garda Helicopter in the Longford/Westmeath area.

The four men and one woman are being questioned in relation to a spate of burglaries in the Longford, Athlone, Ballymahon and Roscommon areas.

Gardai received a report of a car speeding away from what it believed to be the scene of a burglary in Ardagh at around 10.30 am. This car is believed to have crashed in the Tinnynare area of Edgeworthstown and the occupants fled the scene on foot. They proceeded to run through a number of housing estates in the Edgeworthstown area and were discovered hiding behind a commercial premises by Gardai. However the people fled the scene once again and hitched a lift with a passing motorist. The Gardai Air Support unit was in the area and it as called in to the car as far as Collinstown where the occupants got out. They were arrested at the scene. Two men and a woman were brought to Longford Garda Station while the two remaining men were taken to Kells Garda Station where they are being questioned in relation to a number of burglaries.
