Feasibility study on text alerts and community CCTV
Longford/Westmeath Fine Gael Deputy James Bannon has confirmed that further to a Parliamentary Question to the Minister for Justice and Equality with regard to the Text Alert Scheme and Community CCTV, a commitment has been made by the Minister and the Garda authorities to examine the feasibility of extending the schemes within the Longford/Roscommon division.
He commented: “Having previously told me of a need to consult with the Garda authorities on the matter, I am delighted that the Minister has followed up on the matter.
“Minister Shatter has informed me that there 18 Text alert Areas in the Garda Longford/Roscommon Division, 15 of which are in Co Longford at Granard, Mullinalaughta, Drumlish/Ballinamuck, Edgeworthstown, Dromard, Ardagh, Colmcille, Cullyfad, Killoe, Ballinalee, Newtownforbes, Lanesborough, Moydow/Kenagh and Ballymahon.
“Co Longford Community Alert Groups cover approximately half the parishes in the county, giving the highest coverage per head of population in the country.
Deputy Bannon concluded: “Following its launch in 2005 the Community based CCTV Scheme has provided financial assistance towards the capital cost of establishing a Community CCTV system. To date two major rounds of the scheme have been advertised in 2005/06 and 2007, with all funding fully allocated.
“Therefore an extension of the scheme will depend on a number of factors including the availability of funding, the progression of projects already grant aided and overall policy considerations.”
