Fatima film to be shown in St Mel's Cathedral

The double award winning film 'The Call to Fatima' is coming to St Mel's Cathedral on Wednesday, October 28 next at 7.30pm.

The film is based on Sister Lucia's writings, the last visionary of the Fatima apparitions.

The film's producer had received several requests to have it shown in different parishes around Ireland and Longford is one of the lucky parishes to have the chance to see it.

The film, which took six years to complete, was produced by Dubliner, Thomas McCormack, and has already won awards at film festivals in Poland and Belarus for education.

Fr Nigel Charles from Longford Presbytery told the Leader, "It's very exciting the producer himself will attend the screening in St Mel's Cathedral."

"The film is already available in twelve languages and there have been additional requests to have it translated into Korean and the six main Indian languages," he explained.

Between May and October of 1917 Sr Lucia and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto reported visions of a luminous lady, believed to be the Virgin Mary, near Ftima in Portugal.

The lady appeared to the children for six straight months. On July 13, the lady was said to have entrusted the children with three secrets.

Two of the secrets were revealed in 1941 in a document written by Lucia, at the request of the Bishop of Leiria Jos da Silva and the text of the third secret was officially released by Pope John Paul II in 2000.

The visions received widespread publicity, and an estimated 70,000 witnesses were reportedly present for the sixth and final apparition.

Lucia had promised for several months that the lady would perform a miracle on that day "so that all may believe."

Witnesses present in the Cova da Iria that day, as well as some up to 25 miles away, reported that the sun appeared to change colors and rotate, casting off multicolored light across the landscape.

Sadly Sr Lucia passed away four years ago but her physician Dr Branca Paul is among the contributors to the Call of Fatima offering insights into the lively mind of her patient.
