Device not linked to feud
A suspicious device discovered at a house in Lisfarrell, Edgeworthstown was detonated in a controlled explosion by the Army Bomb Disposal Unit on Saturday afternoon. The discovery of the device led to the closure of the N4 on Saturday afternoon and the evacuation of a local family.
The device, an 8-inch cylinder pipe bomb, was discovered at the front gate of a house in Lisfarrell at approximately 12 noon on Saturday. Gardai were called to the scene and the decision was taken to call in the Bomb Squad. Having ascertained that the pipe bomb was viable, the army detonated the device in a controlled explosion on Saturday afternoon.
Gardai are currently carrying out door to door inquiries in relation to the incident and Granard Gardai told the Leader this week that they are following a definite line of inquiry in relation to the matter. However, contrary to some reports, the incident is not believed to have been linked to any existing family feud in the county.
A spokesperson from the Granard Gardai told the Leader: "This was a viable device which would have caused serious damage if it had gone off near anyone." The spokesperson then added that, "no other houses in the area had to be evacuated as the house in question is quite isolated".
The N4 between Edgeworthstown and Longford was closed for three hours by the Gardai following the discovery of the device on the outskirts of Edgeworthstown. At approximately 2pm the Army Bomb Disposal Unit arrived at the scene and carried out the controlled explosion on the pipe bomb. The scene was declared safe at 5pm and the road was re-opened. The device was then taken to the Garda Technical Bureau in the Phoenix Park for further forensic analysis.
When asked about their investigations the spokesperson from Granard Garda Station commented: "There are a lot of allegations about why it happened but we are still investigating the incident and no suspects have been identified as of yet."
Superintendent Dermott Mann of Granard Garda Station is appealing to witnesses or anyone with information about this incident to come forward to Granard Gardai.
