Devastating fire at St Mel's Cathedral

St Mel's Cathedral in Longford has been destroyed by fire.

The blaze took hold in the early hours of Christmas Day morning.

It's understood the fire started at the rear of the building and quickly spread.

The roof collapsed and the historic stained glass windows smashed with the heat of the flames.

Longford fire crews are still at the scene.

It's a devastating blow for everyone in the parish, as only hours before Bishop Colm O'Reilly celebrated Midnight mass for a packed

congregation.

The Leader's Fintan Duffy has posted some video of the Cathedral- these pictures were taken at 8am this morning.
