Death of Sr Rosario Deery

editorial image

The death occurred last Friday of Sr Rosario Deery, at Our Lady’s Manor in Edgeworthstown. Sr Rosario, who was 105, was a member of the Sisters of Mercy and was originally from Dundalk. Sr Rosario moved to Longford as a novice in 1931 and helped to establish a secondary school in Edgeworthstown in 1946. When that school closed after the introduction of free transport, She returned to the Convent of Mercy in Longford, where she continued teaching until her retirement.

A special mass was held to celebrate her 100th birthday in 2008, and she was the first ever nun at the Longford convent to reach that milestone since it was established in 1861

Her funeral mass took place on Monday at Our Lady’s Manor, and was followed by burial at Aughafin cemetary.
