Council probe accident at Edgeworthstown

Safety investigations into a road accident which left a nine year old boy in a serious condition in hospital almost two weeks ago have started, council engineers officials confirmed on Monday.

In a short statement released to the Leader, local authority officials said inquiries were already in motion into the circumstances leading up to the accident outside Edgeworthstown that left St Mary's National School pupil Joshua Tier fighting for his life in hospital.

"We are in the process of gathering information about the incident and we will take appropriate action in due course," the statement outlined.

Joshua's concerned father, Nick had voiced his misgivings in last week's Longford Leader about safety along a stretch of the old N4 route from Edgeworthstown to Longford where the incident occurred on October 4. Joshua had just finished saying goodbye to his friends and was about to make the short journey back home when he was knocked down while attempting to cross the busy road.

News of the accident and its aftermath attracted a deluge of publicity in the national media following Mr Tier's initial interview with the Leader last week.

"It was the most stressful week of our lives," Mr Tier admitted. "Things are only starting to get better now because he (Joshua) is getting better. We are just concentrating on getting Joshua well and after that we'll see."

Mr Tier is seeking the construction of speed ramps and a pedestrian crossing on the road. "You can't let this kind of thing happen again, not when it's so easily fixed. All you are talking about here is a couple of speed ramps and a pedestrian crossing of some kind. There are two big estates down there and surely to God there are kids who will want to play in the playground," he said.

It is not yet known when Joshua will be allowed to return home to Edgeworthstown and continue his rehabilitation. "He is going to have an operation to reconstruct his face and we are seeing the doctor this afternoon. He still has short term memory loss but we are hoping that will go in time," his father added.
