Artwork which last month caused a political row to erupt over its “offensive” material, could be set to come to Longford.

Penned by local artist Shane Cullen, the work dubbed, ‘Fragmens sur les Institutions Républicaines IV’, is based on a collection of prisoners’ messages smuggled out of the H-Block prison in 1981.

Its presence however led to calls from Athlone’s Fine Gael Town Cllr Mark Cooney for its removal. Those pleas were later rejected by the board of Athlone Arts and Heritage, which oversees the managership of the gallery.

Less than a month on from those discussions, Longford Town Cllr Denis Hughes has succeeded in getting council officials to explore the possibility of bringing Mr Cullen’s exhibiton to Longford.

No final decision has yet been reached, though Longford Town Council are understood to be investigating the matter further.
