Concern over ‘liberal licensing hours’

A local district court judge has expressed his concern about liberal licensing hours in Longford, which he said resulted in “yahoos” going around town at early hours in the morning.

Judge Seamus Hughes, speaking during a case at Longford District Court where a defendant was before the court on public order charges, said that Longford seems to be operating an hour behind other towns after being told by gardai in court that there were a number of late night revellers around the town at 3.45am, which was the time of the offence.

Judge Hughes noted that in most other rural towns there would only have been a handful of people around at that time and said it appeared that Longford had very liberal licensing hours, resulting in “yahoos” disturbing people late at night.

The defendant in the case was asked to make a €250 contribution to the Older Persons Network and Judge Hughes warned, “Any young men who wish to act the cowboy better have €250; Garda Belton can bring me as many as possible.”
