Community policing concern

Longford Town councillors have expressed their concern at the reduction in the numbers of gardai in the community policing unit in Longford Town.

Speaking at last Wednesday’s Joint Policing Committee meeting, Inspector Fran Nicholson said the creation of a new unit after the introduction of the new rosters in May resulted in Longford losing one of its community gardai.

“I’m very aware of the importance of the community gardai and indeed of the good work that they’re doing in Longford. Hopefully we will get the unit back to a full complement, but 900 gardai have left the force recently and their replacements haven’t dropped out of the sky,” he said.

Speaking about the changes, Cllr Paul Connell said:. “Community gardai have done an outstanding job in Longford. They are part of the community, and are linked into it. We need to do what we can to maintain that level of support,” he said.
