Christmas giving tree launched at Supervalu

Christmas is a time of giving and nowhere is it more meaningful than at the Longford Christmas Giving Tree, which provides gifts to disadvantaged local children at Christmas
Last Friday, November 30, the Christmas Giving Tree was unveiled at SuperValu in the Hazelwood Shopping Centre, and will remain there until Christmas Eve.
“Roy Davis and his staff at Hazelwood Shopping centre have been extraordinary each year in helping us make this happen. For this we are very grateful indeed,” said organiser Colin Galligan. “This is our 12th year running the Christmas Giving Tree in Longford. Last year we catered for over 300 local Longford children. It was a great success, best to date.
“Christmas can be a very difficult time for many people living in County Longford, especially children of under-privileged families. The Christmas Giving Tree helps to make Christmas a little bit more special for these children,” he added.
Colin explained how it works: You simply choose a card and buy a gift for them and return it to the tree. The charities then distribute the presents to the children. For Colin, the importance of an initiative such as the Christmas Giving Tree is clear.
“It doesn’t matter whether you choose a big or small gift, it’s the thought and the act of giving that counts and all gifts are gratefully accepted.
“If you would like to get involved in the campaign simply walk into SuperValu at the Hazelwood Shopping Centre and select a card from the Christmas Giving Tree. The card will have the child’s first name and age. Choose a suitable gift for the age group of the child and return it to the Tree,” said Colin.
When asked what type of presents are suitable for the project, Colin said, “Anything from DVDs, games, vouchers, action men and dolls are all welcomed and how much you spend is entirely up to you.
“I think the Christmas Giving Tree really brings back the true spirit of Christmas to Longford and I’m very proud to be involved with the campaign.”
All gifts/cards must be returned by Saturday the 22nd of December to allow time to distribute them all before Xmas. No used toys accepted.
