Despite the bitter disappointment of losing out on the Intermediate title after a nail-biting finish with Granard, Newtowncashel’s team have the final of this year’s Celebrity Bainisteoir RTE reality TV show to look forward to, which takes place in just three weeks’ time.

Managed by Roz Purcell, Newtowncashel made their much anticipated TV debut in the competition on Sunday evening last against Cork side, Ballinaora, under the guidance of Stephen Ireland’s girlfriend Jessica Lawlor.

The beautiful weather shone down and the village of Newtowncashel, including the local GAA grounds, Pairc Chiaran, looked glorious on TV screens across the country, as locals provided a warm welcome to the Cork side.

Dominant throughout the game, the south Longford side booked their place in the semi-final with a win, despite a late surge from Ballinora.

The following match saw them see of Donegal side, Naomh Bhride to clinch a place in the final. That match takes place in Parnell Park on Friday, October 26 next at 7:30pm against Moy Davitts who hail from Foxford, Co Mayo .

Mick Casey, Newtowncashel told the Leader on Monday that while the excitement was mounting on the back of the side’s success in Celebrity Banisteoir, losing the Intermediate Final had been a blow to the club’s morale.

“All we can do now is see how we go; we are through to the final and it is exciting, there is no doubt about that, but we didn’t go to good in the Intermediate game and that was very disappointing,” he said.

“The [Celebrity Banisteoir] game on Sunday was great and we had one of the largest crowds ever in Newtowncashel on the day – over 1,500 people were here – and there was a great atmosphere around the place.”

While the scene has already been set for the Celebrity Bainisteoir final in Parnell Park, the Cashel team have another hurdle to overcome before their TV fate is revealed at the end of October.

Next Sunday, October 14 the side heads into its first Leinster outing when the team meets with Kildare’s Clogherinkeo in Newbridge in the Leinster Junior Club first round match, which will clash with the Longford Senior County Final

“Celebrity Bainisteoir is definitely adding a bit of excitement to the area and I think that the whole area came across very well on television the other night.

“People are very proud of all that has been achieved and people are enjoying the buzz around the place.”

Mr Casey went on to say that the ‘Cashel side “very much appreciated” all the help and support to date, giving particular mention to all the sponsors.

“I don’t know what we would do without the sponsorship, to be honest,” he explained further.

“We have to change the jerseys for the final and that costs money, I can tell you.”

Asked if there was any truth to reports in the media at the weekend that Roz Purcell made promises to shower with the Cashel lads if they clinch the Celebrity Bainisteoir Champions title, Mr Casey replied, “Oh sure look, anything is possible; we’ll just have to wait and see.”
