Cannabis detection on the rise

The rollout of a succession of undercover operations helped spark a 25 per cent increase in drug detections last year in the Granard Garda Division.

Cannabis cultivation proved to be the most commonly seized drug in 2011 as criminal gangs looked to cash in on its new found dominance in the Irish drugs industry.

Addressing those figures earlier this week, Granard Superintendent Ian Lackey said the new offensive and unsung efforts of officers had proved instrumental in raising detection rates.

“Operation Rebus was where a lot of our younger members came in during their own time without pay and we have had some great success because of it,” he said.
