Call for return of former Summer Festival
Longford Town Council has agreed to head a working committee to investigate bringing about a return of the Longford Summer Festival, after Cllr Gerry Warnock submitted a motion to the Council last Wednesday.
“I am recommending we seize the opportunity which has been created by the departure of the Longford Banjo Festival. I believe that this negative can be turned around by the members of this council.
“I remember in a Longford of better times, the Longford Summer Festival was a celebration of this town and country. It had something for everyone, and was hugely supported by people from all over the country and beyond,” Mr Warnock said.
Town Council Mayor Cllr James Keogh was quick to air his support and called on the Town Council to redirect funds set aside for the Banjo Festival to Cllr Warnock’s proposal. “In the past Longford town council gave €3,500 to the banjo festival, I suggest that this money should be put forward by the town council.”
Cllr Keogh also called on the council to utilise funding available to the new tourism committee, set to be established in the coming weeks.
He also called for the Chamber of Commerce to get involved, despite his recent disagreement with its President, Seamus Butler. “The Chamber of Commerce are running a festival for Patrick’s Day, so they should to be brought into [this] too, despite the chairman saying he wouldn’t work with us here while I’m in the chair, so he might have to rethink that one.”
