Busy summer in store for Dáil deputies

While the Dáil breaks for its annual summer holidays, Longford TDs James Bannon and Peter Kelly have a busy couple of months ahead of them.

Fianna Fail's Deputy Peter Kelly told the Leader that he plans to remain around Longford for most of the summer break. "I'll be in the office for the month of July; I hope to take two weeks' holidays in August – that's the plan," said Peter Kelly.

He added that he hopes to complete a tour of Longford, and Westmeath.

"Normally when I have any visitors to Longford, I put them in the car and I bring them on a tour of the county," said Deputy Kelly, who will also take in a trip to Achill and Donegal as part of his holidays.

Ahead of that, he will have meetings of the Communication, Energy and Natural Resources committee to attend in Dil Eireann for the remainder of the month.

Deputy James Bannon, speaking from the Dil, said he too has meetings of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government committee to attend throughout the month of July, which resume again in September.

Deputy Bannon said he has no plans at this stage, but said, "My holiday is moving around meeting my constituents, and I hope to get around to meet as many people as possible in the highways and byways, and streets of Longford. You're always busier when the Dil is in recess because you're out and about more."

Also on the agenda for the Legan-based deputy, are a few leaflets that he hopes to distribute, one on Lisbon Treaty, another pay rights and a third on the changes in February budget.

"It's very important for the economy that Lisbon is passed, because we have done so well out of Europe. What I am very disappointed at is the way that the government is throwing back money for various schemes that are co-financed by the EU," said Deputy Bannon, who cited the REPS scheme as one such scheme.
