Ballymahon Community Alert launch text alert scheme

A new text alert service has been launched in the Ballymahon area by the local Community Alert group. Rory Gallagher of the Community Alert committee said he hopes the new scheme will help to “alleviate people’s fears” about crimes being committed in the area.

“We started work last year,” Mr Gallagher said. “We held a series of public meetings which were attended by around 50 local people. Then Bernard Kearing, a Community Development Officer from Muintir na Tíre, met with us and explained how to set it up.

“The scheme goes from Terlicken into the town of Ballymahon, out to Newcastle Woods, Caoimhe Beag and Caoimhe Mór, and out beyond Kepak, where it meets the Tang scheme. It also stretches out along the Edgeworthstown Road,” he explained.

“The local garda liason officer, Ray Tubman, worked closely with us on the project, as has the officer who replaced him, Tom Regan. If gardaí have any information on suspicious activities in the area, they can send a text to warn residents. There are currently 140 people on the scheme,” said Mr Gallagher.

Public meetings will be held to update the community on developments throughout the coming year. Residents who wish to join the scheme can get more information by phoning the Bridgeway Family Resource Centre on 090 6432691.
