Ballinalee station closure slammed

A government decision to close a north Longford garda station made headlines again this week, this time at a Joint Policing Committee (JPC) meeting.

Cllrs Tommy Stokes and Eddie Kelly led the protests following Justice Minister Alan Shatter’s decision to include Ballinalee Garda Station as part of 95 such closures nationwide.

“I know a lot of people that live there and I just think it’s a disgrace he (Mr Shatter) could do that with a stroke of a pen,” said an animated Cllr Stokes.

His Independent colleague Cllr Kelly also lashed out, directing his frustration at Environment Minister Phil Hogan.

“He (Mr Hogan) did the same with the town councils,” snapped Cllr Kelly. “Rural Ireland is gone.”
