A two-year-old toddler is fighting for his life in Dublin’s Temple Street Hospital this morning (Friday) after a people carrier carrying seven passengers crashed outside Ballymahon yesterday afternoon, writes Liam Cosgrove.

The baby boy sustained serious head injuries and was last night transferred to the Dublin hospital for further treatment.

Six other passengers who were travelling in the blue coloured Ford Galaxy car, which included three adults and three children along with the stricken two-year-old were taken to Mullingar’s Midland Regional Hospital for their injuries.

All of the victims, who are foreign nationals, suffered what were described this morning as non life threatening injuries.

The scene of the accident, along a stretch of the R392 at Terlicken about one mile west of Ballymahon, was closed for a lengthy period of time yesterday afternoon with diversions put in place.

Crash scene investigators have closed the road for a second time this morning as part of an ongoing investigation into what may have caused the accident.

Gardai have so far remained tight lipped, but the Leader understands one line of thought currently being examined is whether the car may have been attempting an overtaking manoeuvre before going out of control.

In an effort to further their own enquiries, gardai have launched an appeal for motorists who may have been travelling along the road at around 1:20pm yesterday afternoon to contact them.

“There may well have been motorists who may have witnessed this accident and we are asking those people to come forward and assist us,” said Superintendent Denis Shields.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Longford Garda Station at (043) 3346741.
