Attempted child abduction in Longford town

Gardai have launched an investigation following a failed child abduction attempt from a school in Longford town, the Leader has learned.

Detectives confirmed an approach was made to a pupil outside St Michael’s National School by a dark coloured car as the pupil attempted to make his way to school last Friday morning.

The pupil, it’s believed, was dropped off close to the school and was walking along a footpath at around 9:20am when a vehicle with up to three occupants tried to entice the youngster towards the car, which was parked close by.

Gardai have declined to release any further details about the incident, but it’s understood one of the car’s passengers wound down a window before asking the pupil to approach the vehicle.

The child ignored this request and then one of the suspects made a lunge for him before the child made his getaway towards the school. The car fled from the scene.

Gardai have this week begun an investigation and are continuing to conduct a series of interviews. A spokesperson said so far no arrests have been made in the hope members of the public and potential eye witnesses may come forward.

“We are investigating it (attempted abduction) and we are appealing for witnesses to come forward,” said the spokesperson on Monday afternoon.

No-one from St Michael’s NS was available for comment on Monday.

Witnesses and anyone who noticed anything untoward outside the grounds of St Michael’s NS, St Mel’s Road, Longford between 9am and 9:30am last Friday is asked to contact Longford Garda Station at (043) 3346741.
