Appeal over fatal N4 crash

Gardai have launched a public appeal for witnesses after a pensioner was killed in a road traffic accident outside Edgeworthstown last Friday evening.

Seventy-nine-year-old Joseph O’Kane from Clogherhead, Co Louth died when the camper van he was driving was involved in a collision with a truck on the main N4 Longford to Edgeworthstown road at around 5:20pm.

His wife, a woman in her 60s, who was travelling in the passenger seat beside Mr O’Kane was injured and treated for shock following the incident. The truck driver sustained a minor cut.

Gardai are working on the possibility that Mr O’Kane may have either fallen asleep or suffered a heart attack.

A spokesperson on Monday however, was keen to stress nothing has been confirmed at this stage as to what may have caused the accident, leading gardai to appeal for witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Granard Garda Station at 043 6687660.
