Adopted Longfordian could be Ireland's next Eurovision star

Irish-American singer Corina Brouder – a performer with strong connections to Longford – is being tipped as one of the leading contenders to represent Ireland at the 2007 Eurovision Song Contest. Although RTE has not yet released details of the selection process for next year's event, the Eurovision website 'All Kinds of Everything' is predicting that Corina could become the Irish entrant at next year's contest in Finland.

The website has been examining the aftermath of Brian Kennedy's entry this year and has issued a poll asking visitors who they would like to see represent Ireland in 2007. At the time of going to press, Corina was the clear leader, amassing more votes than other possible performers such as Ronan Keating, BellX1 and Simon Casey.

The site stated that Corina has wanted to sing for Ireland for some time now, and "is known to have recorded a number of demos of potential Eurovision songs written by Irish songwriters."

Corina currently resides in her native Woodlawn, New York, but in recent years she came to live in Ireland on the advice of pop music mogul Louis Walsh. She based herself in Longford during that time, and appeared on the RTE series 'You're A Star'.

She also has family links to this region as her grandmother Mary Hegarty hails from Mohill, Co Leitrim, while her grandfather Michael Gilbride is from Swanlinbar, Co Cavan.

She is currently managed by her sister Christina Brouder and Longford native Andy Fitzpatrick.

Corina is currently featuring in the most popular TV show of the summer in the US – 'America's Got Talent'. As a result, her profile in the States has never been higher.

Some 25 million viewers watched her last appearance on the Simon Cowell-backed NBC series, and even more are expected to tune in this evening (Wednesday, August 9) as she again appears in front of the three celebrity judges: R'n'B singer Brandy, actor David Hasselhoff and UK media personality Piers Morgan.

Corina is a strong supporter of the Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform (ILIR) – a group which is campaigning to normalise the status of thousands of illegal Irish in the Unites States. She and her family band 'The Sprits of Gilbride' have been performing at ILIR fundraisers in between tapings of 'America's Got Talent'.

Her popularity on the TV show is evidenced by the fact that, since the series began several weeks ago, her performance schedule has become fully booked for the next two years and will incorporate venues from Hawaii to Australia.

Now, if the rumours are to be believed, this schedule may also include a booking at the next Eurovision in Helsinki on May 10 and 12, 2007.
