A glimpse of 1970s Longford

A video of Longford town which was captured by Teffia Park native Denis Hughes on old Super 8 Film from the rooftop of St Mel’s Cathedral, Longford in 1976 has received over 1,100 hits since it was uploaded onto You Tube last week.
The video entitled ‘Longford 1976’ provides footage of a number of the town’s landmarks including the building where Hanlon’s Ambulance factory was situated as well as the Temperance Hall, buildings along the main throughfare and Dublin Street. Also visible throughout the unique footage are Honda 50’s – which were all the rage at the time – as well as a number of old Volkswagen Beetles, Fiats and the infamous mini strolling through the town and not in gridlocked traffic it must be said. But for the landmarks that have survived the test of time, the terrain and landscape of the county town as we know it today, is barely recognisable compared to that hot summer’s day in July 1976 when Mr Hughes joined his father - who was roofing St Mel’s Cathedral on the day – to take images, that at the time, were not envisaged to go down in history.
