19 people die on Longford roads over five year period

The latest statistics from the Road Safety Authority (RSA) point to the fact that there has been a 40% reduction in the number of road deaths in Co Longford over the past five years.
The information has been released under the Government Road Safety Strategy 2007 to 2012 which also recorded a national reduction in deaths on Irish roads by a massive 57% for the same period.
The report, highlights the lives saved in Longford over the past five years,” said Noel Brett, Chief Executive RSA, adding that since 2007, 19 people had lost their lives on Longford roads.
“The reduction in road deaths in Longford shows just what can be achieved when communities come together and say, enough is enough - we don’t want any more people dying on our roads. All it takes to make a difference is for one person to say, I’m going to change my behaviour on the roads so that I can keep myself, and others, safe when we’re out on the roads.”
Mr Brett went on to thank Longford people for the role that each person played in reducing local road deaths over the last five years, and also pointed to the efforts of An Garda Síochána as well.
“On behalf of the RSA, I would like to thank each and every person in Co Longford for the contribution they have made to keeping roads the county safe,” he added. “It is the efforts made by each and every one, that has helped reduce road deaths in Longford and I would also like to pay tribute to An Garda Síochána, emergency services personnel and the local authorities for their work in reducing the death toll on our roads. If we all redouble our efforts in 2013, there is no reason why we can’t make Ireland’s roads the safest in the world.”
Road deaths in Ireland fell every year since 2006. This latest road stragety – the third instalment of its kind - aimed to reduce road deaths nationally to 252 by the end of 2012. the target was achieved and surpassed three years ahead of schedule in 2009, and there has also been a 51% reduction in the number serious injuries sustained on the country’s roads as a result of road traffic colisions.
