History had a big influence on the Ramblers trip to Drogheda and Oldbridge on Sunday October 25th and Oliver Usher, the leader for the day, is an expert on the subject. The walk began at St. Laurence’s Gate in Drogheda, a very imposing reminder of the wall which once surrounded the town. Oliver pointed out several buildings related to the town’s past, among them the two St. Peter’s Churches. The Protestant church has a very interesting interior with balconies on each side. The graveyard has a rather macabre ‘cadaver’ gravestone depicting two skeletons set into the graveyard wall. The Catholic St. Peter’s is famous for its shrine containing the Relic of the Head of St. Oliver Plunkett among many other ornate features. The group moved on to cross the Boyne for the 5km walk to the site of The Battle of The Boyne at Oldbridge. The riverside walk included a new boardwalk passing under the new cable-stayed Mary McAleese Boyne Valley Bridge and later there was an opportunity for a short break beside the first lock on the Boyne Navigation Canal which dates from 1778. There were so many points of interest in Drogheda that the party arrived in Oldbridge just as the gardens were closing but the cafe stayed open long enough for refreshments before everyone boarded the coach to return to Mullingar. Thanks first to Oliver and Aideen Usher for the constant stream of information and guidance throughout the afternoon and also to Christy the driver and all at Chris Salmon Coaches of Castlepollard for the day’s transport. The Ramblers will visit Taghmon near Mullingar on Sunday November 8th for a 7.5km road walk. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at Taghmon Church at 2pm. See www.boherquillramblers.ie for details and photos of Ramblers recent trips.
