Jim Phelan tells me that Thursday, 29th October sees a film crew arrive at his Fiddlers Green Pub, Streete to record a programme on the pubs of Rural Ireland. Jim would like to have at least 20 people seated in the bar at the time and he says it’s your chance to feature on T.V.; the time will be 2p.m. This unusual event will be detailed in these notes next week and the week after, so make sure to read these notes and hopefully we will help Jim make it a memorable occasion which he is organising.

The Ramblers returned to Drumshanbo, County Leitrim from Friday the 9th to Sunday the 11th of October following a highly enjoyable visit last year. On Saturday they walked a circuit of Lough Meelagh near picturesque Keadue village in Roscommon which has won several awards in the Tidy Towns Competition. The Lough itself also looked at its best in the beautiful weather as the Ramblers walked the mix of woodland, road and lakeshore which made up the route. Sunday’s walk was a more leisurely walk from the Hotel as far as Acres Lough along the Lough Allen Canal and then back to Drumshanbo by a side road through Corryard, south of the town. The group then dispersed, some heading for lunch stops on the route home, while a few walkers enjoyed a sunny afternoon on the lower slopes of Sliabh an Iarann. Thanks due to the staff of the Lough Allen Hotel for the hospitality and excellent food, entertainment and facilities. A big thank you to Club Chair Patricia Bruton who organised the trip and Club President Brian Nerney who was ever-present to collect walkers and carry lunches etc. whenever needed. On Sunday October 25th Oliver Usher will lead the Ramblers on a walk in Drogheda and along the boardwalk beside the Boyne to the site of the Battle of The Boyne at Oldbridge. A coach will leave the car park beside the Fire Station in Mullingar at 11am. Please bring a packed lunch and bus fare. Please also take special note of the early start time. See www.boherquillramblers.ie.
The club annual members’ clay shoot will be held on Saturday, 24th October in the club grounds at 12noon with last cards at 4pm. Please note that this shoot is for members only, and the presentation of prizes will be held at the Club Presentation Night on the 1st November.
