Friends of Longford Dyslexia

The Newtownforbes Friends of Longford Dyslexia Workshop and Longford Mental Health are holding a fundraising day on Sunday, 25th October 2015. Fundraising consists of 5km/11km walk, 50km/80km cycle and a Soap Box Derby. Registration for 80km cycle takes place at Paddy Joe Murphy Sports Complex at 8.30am. Registration for 50km cycle takes place at 9am. Registration for cycle €20. Registration for 5km walk is at 11am and for 11km at noon – mid day. Registration €10. Four in a Row Celebrations

Clonguish are still the only Club in County Longford to have brought home the Sean Connolly Cup four years in a row by winning the Longford Senior Football Championship in 1962,1963,1964 and 1965. A major event to mark the 50th Anniversary of this remarkable achievement will be held in the P.J. Murphy Memorial Hall on Saturday, 7th November 2015. A full four course meal will be served and the event will be fully licensed. Music will be provided by Aftermath. As there is massive interest in the event and as capacity is limited it is important that you book your tickets immediately with Catherine Faughnan (087 9956496) or Donna Hagan (086 8855158). Tickets are keenly priced at €25 each.

U-19 National Triathlon

Well done to local athlete, Ciaran Madden on winning the U-19 National Triathlon Age Group Series recently. Going into the last race of the season he needed to beat his two nearest rivals to capture the title. After wins for Ciaran in  Sligo, Ballyshannon and Mullingar the deciding race was in Clogherhead in Co. Louth. With athletes awarded points based on their times he beat his personal best by five minutes and saw off his nearest rivals to claim the title. The race which is made up of a 750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run was completed in 1hr 5m. Ciaran who just turned 18 is a member of Longford Triathlon Club. He will be presented with his award at the Triathlon Ireland Gala Dinner in Dublin next month. Congratulations Ciaran on your great achievement.

Dinner Dance

Longford Region Pioneer dinner dance will be held in the Rustic Inn, Abbeyshrule at 9pm on Friday, November 13th next. The ever- popular TR Dallas will supply the music and non Pioneers will be especially welcomed. Details and tickets from Michael McVeigh.

Clonguish Ladies

Following on from a fantastic win, in the Leinster quarter final, last Saturday, 10th October 2015, away to Strabannon Parnells in Louth the Clonguish Ladies Senior Football team are playing in the Leinster semi-final on Saturday 24th October 2015 away to Naomh Chiarain in Ferbane, County Offaly, with a throw in time of 2pm. All support will be very much appreciated and please spread the word.

Fright Fest Fancy Dress

Complex, Newtownforbes on Saturday, 31st October 5pm to 8pm. Admission kids €5, Adults Free. Music, face painting, games, etc. Prize for best dressed boy/girl. Refreshments served. All proceeds donated to The Miscarriage Association of Ireland.

Sacrament of Confirmation

6th Class pupils from Scoil Mhuire National School will make their confirmation on the Friday, 13th May 2016.


Our sympathy is extended to the Mahon family, Ballagh on the death of Bridie Mahon. May she rest in peace.

Craft Fair

Our second annual pre Christmas craft and artisan fair will take place on Sunday, 22nd November in GAA complex Newtownforbes from 11am to 4pm. This year the fair will be in aid of Longford Mental Health Association and AMA Ireland. Tables are limited and spaces are filling up fast. For further information please contact Ann on 087 9248816.

Karate Club

Well done to all of our students who graded recently and a huge welcome to all of our new members. Preparations are now in full swing for the World Championships in Dublin next June with a number of students going forward for selection as part of the AMA Ireland squad. AMA Ireland has been successful in its bid to host the WUKF world championships having outbid a number of other organisations throughout the county. Newtownforbes & Kilglass karate club became full members of AMA Ireland in 2013 and it is a great honour and a magnificent achievement for our students to be able to compete at this level. Our classes run every Monday in Newtownforbes from 7-7.45pm for juniors and 7.45pm to 8.30pm for seniors and in Kilglass every Wednesday from 7-8pm. Despite our every growing numbers new members are always welcome- 1st class if free- and for further information please contact Sensei Ann Devlin on 087 9248816.


The local ICA Guild is holding an Information night in the Parish Hall, Newtownforbes Tuesday, 27th November at 8.30pm. There will be a display of arts, crafts and produce. Refreshments will be served. Come along and meet the members for an insight into ICA. You will have an opportunity to learn more about how the ICA activities and skills fit into our modern world.
