Boherquill Ramblers

Marita and James MacNerney led a Shanmullagh Bog and hill walk starting at the ‘98 Hall in Ballinamuck on Sunday, July 5th. Thirteen people turned up all with rain gear and after a heavy shower they climbed steeply to a monument for General Humbert & The Croppy Graves. After a rest there to admire the scenery, they continued along a narrow road, around some sharp bends to reach the main Arva-Drumlish road. After a short distance they turned left down a bog road which leads into Shanmullagh Bog. This dirt road gradually became a grassy track, then more bog road and on to a tarred road (Legga - Ballinamuck) and returned to the Hall. This was an 8km walk and took about 2 hours. All arrived back to the village in good spirits where they sat in the sun and ate ice cream! Ballinamuck has the distinction of being the site of the last great battle on September 8th of the 1798 Rebellion. Hundreds of pikemen were murdered in Shanmullagh Bog, while the French soldiers surrendered and were repatriated back to France. Many thanks to Marita and James, not only for leading the walk, but also for all the information on the history of the area. On Sunday July 19th the Ramblers will walk part of the Westmeath Way. Cars will leave Boherquill at 1.30pm and meet at Lilliput, beside Lough Ennell at 2pm. Find out more about The Ramblers and see the Photo Gallery atwww.boherquillramblers.ie.
