Congratulations to Nuala and Pauric Quinn, Ballinacross and Blooming Buddies, Main Street, Granard on the birth of their baby girl, Amy. She is a welcome sister for John and Niall.

Cemetery Sunday

Cemetery Sunday will be held in Abbeylara on Sunday, 26 July. Please help with the grass cutting, weeding, cleaning and tidying of the Cemetery for this important event.

Citizens Information

There will be no Citizens Information Outreach Service in Granard on Thursday mornings for the months of July and August. If you require any information or advice please call to our office in Longford which is situated at Level One at Longford Shopping Centre or alternatively call our National Call Centre on 076 1074000. This Service provides free, quality, confidential, up-to-date information and advice to all in relation to their civil and social rights, entitlements and the social services that exist to support them.

Agricultural Show

Granard’s 63rd Agricultural Show will be held at Higginstown Park,

Granard on the 18 July, Contact Breda on 085 1632901, promised to be

a great family day out with many attractions for all.

Cemetery Sunday

Mass will be celebrated in the New Cemetery in Granardkille on Sunday 26 July at 1.00pm and in the old Cemetery Granardkille on Sunday 2 August at 11.30am.


Colmcille Ploughing Association is holding their annual ploughing and field day on Sunday 30 August on the lands of the Bleakley Family, Smear. In conjunction with the normal ploughing and side shows there will be an open day in Bleakley’s Mill, where people can witness for themselves how the mill worked and gain a piece of history from days gone by. It promises to be a great family fun day for everyone so make sure and come along!

Garden Party

An opportunity to socialise and take a couple of happy hours out will take place in Lus na Greine Resource Centre Granard on Friday, 24 July in the Centre’s Garden at approximately 12 noon until 2pm. We will have music, finger food and a chance to enjoy the outdoors and chat to neighbours and friends. All welcome!


Takes place every Wednesday night at 8.45pm in the Community Centre Granard. Proceeds go towards St. Mary’s Granard and Abbeylara GAA Clubs. Jackpot now stands at €20,000. Seats are limited with this big Jackpot so come along early and enjoy the fun. IT COULD BE YOU!

Abbeylara GAA will hold their annual Big Breakfast on Sunday, 26 July in the Parish Centre, Abbeylara, from 8.00am to 12.30pm. Please support.

Abbeylara GAA will hold an important club meeting on Thursday, 16 July in the Handball Sports Complex, Abbeylara at 9.00pm. Full attendance please.

Rosie Run

The annual Rosie Run in aid of Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) will take place from Loch Gowna on Sunday, 19 July commencing at 1.30pm. Registration will take place in Lough Gowna Community Centre from 12 noon on the day and refreshments will be served in the hall after the event with prizes also presented on the day. We appeal to all to come out and support this worthy cause.

Volunteer Drivers are needed in County Longford to drive Cancer patients to treatments. Tidy Towns

It’s that time of year again. The village is looking well and a special thanks to all the local residents who are out making sure their premises are not going to lose us points.  Every little thing out of place will cost us points. Thanks to the Community Employment workers and the TUS workers for the ongoing work in our Village.  It is very important to keep our village litter free, if you see it, bin it.

The Carers Association

The Carers Association are providing the QQI (FETAC) Level 5 Activities of Living Patient Care module in Tullamore on 16 July 2015. For more information please contact the training unit on 057 93 70221. Occupational First Aid Refresher will be scheduled on demand.

Memorial Tractor Run

Philip Sorohan Memorial Tractor Run will take place on Sunday 19 July 2015, all proceeds to “Kevin Bell Foundation”.  Registration will take place at Dillon’s Bar and Bistro at 10.30am sharp with refreshments served, the run will be approximately 20 miles, then dinner will be served in Dillon’s Bar and Bistro.  The registration fee for this event is 20 Euro.  Collections/Buckets will be available so please support.  For more information please contact 086 8724458 or 086 3847482.

Breffni Challenge

The Annual Breffni 3 Province Challenge, Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, 20K will take place this year on Saturday, 1 August with the proceeds going as usual to St. Luke’s Hospital for Cancer Cure, Care and Control, N.B.C.R.I. (National Breast Cancer Research Institute), and Galway and Cavan/Monaghan Cancer Homecare.

5K Walk

Christina Dempsey will be attempting to do a 5km walk on Saturday, 18 July in Loch Key Forest Park, Boyle, at 11.00am for the Huntington Disease Association of Ireland. Gun Club AGM

The Club held their annual general meeting on Friday night, 3 July in the shooting grounds Derragh. The Chairman Michael Barber thanked all who attended the meeting. A special word of thanks to the local farmers and landowners for their co-operation during the year and also to the business people who sponsored our open clay bird shoot recently and all those who supported the club during the year. The following officers were elected on the night President: Dan O’Driscoll, Chairman: Michael Barber, Vice Chairman: P.J. Reilly, Secretary: Ciaran McGivney, Treasurers: Phil Donohue and Padraigh Monaghan, Safety Officer: John Crudden, Delegates to Longford Shooting and Conservation Council: John Flynn and Dessie Flynn and Vermin Control Officers: Richard Flynn and Jimmy Garvey. Any members who did not attend the meeting please pay their compensation cover and membership fee immediately as it is now due to the sectary Ciaran McGivney. A vote of sympathy was passed on the night for all families who had bereavement in the parish during the year.

Visitor Centre Project

Granard Visitor Centre Project will hold a public meeting on Tuesday night next, July 21 at 8.30pm in our new buildings at Rathcronan (opposite Kearney’s). We will also be having our monthly draws for June and July on the night.
