The John Dungan branch of Comhaltas will hold their annual general meeting on Thursday night at 9pm in Granard Area Action Group Office, Main Street, Granard. All are welcome. A variety concert will take place in the Longford Arms Ballroom on Thursday, 9 October in aid of Mental Health Association. A host of artists will be giving of their services including Mick Flavin. Tickets on the door. Your support will be appreciated.
The Club would like to extend their deepest sympathies to the Cronogue family, Longford Road on the recent passing of Johnny Cronogue who was a lifelong member of Granard Gun Club. May he rest in peace. There will be a general meeting for all club members on Monday 13 October at 9pm in the Shooting Grounds.
Pitch & Putt
Granard Pitch and Putt Club will hold a very important meeting on Monday, 13 October at 8.15pm in St. Mary’s G.A.A. Clubhouse. All members please attend as there are some very important items are on the agenda for discussion.
Congratulations to Granard Tidy Towns committee who were instrumental in securing the assistance and grant aid from Longford Co. Co. in getting the paint project underway in the town. Many premises have been greatly improved and more are in the process of being completed. This project together with the new footpaths in certain areas of town is a wonderful improvement for the town and should certainly improve markings for the Tidy Towns next year. Well done to all concerned.
A night remembering Jimmy Macken will take place in the Boomerang Bar Granard on Saturday, 18 October. All proceeds from the night go to St. Luke’s Hospital Dublin; NBCRI Galway (Breast Cancer Research) Cavan Cancer Homecare Association. Food; Spot Prizes and Raffle on the night. Music on the night by Chuck and June. Your support will be appreciated.
Granard guild held their monthly meeting last Thursday evening last Mr. Gary Brady the Environmental Officer with Longford Co. Co. gave a very informative talk on all aspects of the environment from water to energy saving; food wastage and recycling and composting. All present were very appreciative of the knowledge he imparted to us. Art Appreciation continues now for the next 4 weeks of October 9/16/23/30 at Granard Branch Library. Next meeting will take place on Thursday 6 November and the guild will host the Federation meeting and Cookery Cup Competition on 20 November so a busy time ahead for the guild.

The Caring and Sharing Association has been active in Longford for thirty years and offers a social event each month to over thirty people with special needs who are from all areas of the county. Our helpers are one-to-one in a group setting offering each person quality friendship and support. Presently we are recruiting volunteers. We welcome volunteers from all walks of life from students of 16 upwards to those who gave retired and wish to share one day a month of their time with another person. The annual Novena to our Blessed Lady in St. Mary’s Church, Granard will commence on Wednesday, 22 October at 7.30pm and will continue until Wednesday 17 December. The Novena is a time of reflection, petition, praise and thanksgiving. All are invited to take part.
Moatsiders Active Age Group
Our next gathering is on this Thursday, 9 October when we will be travelling to Malahide Castle and Gardens. Bus will depart Rath Mhuire Centre at 10.00am.

Granard Country Markets continue each Friday at Upper Main Street next door the Post Office. They now have local honey in stock as well as the usual supply of beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables; home baking; crafts; firewood etc.

A large selection of winter coats, jackets now in stock, also lovely boots. Come in and browse at your ease in our newly refurbished Siopa. Lots of beautiful men’s suits and shirts, children’s clothes for all ages, also toys books and a treasure trove of bric-a-brac. Please drop in your cast offs to An Siopa or the centre, everything welcome. If you can not get in we can arrange to collect from you, simply phone the centre and we will do the rest. Our opening hours at the Siopa are Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10am to 5pm.
All monies earned in An Siopa go directly and totally to projects in the Community.
Enrolment for music lessons on Tin Whistle; Piano Accordion and Keyboard with Philip Clarke will be held in Crawford’s Lounge Abbeylara on this Thursday, 25 September at 7pm. Price is €4 per class.
The Granard Christmas Lights committee is actively fundraising to buy and install new Christmas lighting this year. Each business is requested to sell a book of tickets amongst their customer’s friends and family. Let’s all come together to be proud and believe in our town and put Granard at the top of the list as the town to visit and shop in this Christmas.
In conjunction with the Christmas Lights fundraising the annual Fancy Dress will be held in the Boomerang Bar on Saturday, 25 October. Come along and join in the fun.
