Championship: Arva played Ballymachugh in the Hotel Kilmore Junior Football Championship Final in Kingspan Breffni Park on Sunday last and emerged victorious on a score Arva 2-11 Ballymachugh 0-8. Ballymachugh defeated Arva in the opening game in the competition but on this occasion there was only going to be one result. Playing with the breeze in the first half Arva raced into a 1-8 to 0-1 lead at half time with scores from Jonathan McCabe (3rd & 6th min), Conal Sheridan (12/13/19th min), Peter Morris (20 min), Brian Ellis (Goal – penalty 24 min), Fergal McGlade (25 min), Conal Sheridan (26 min). With the breeze behind them Ballymachugh tried to cut into the Arva lead and hit 4 points without reply inside 8 minutes and as Arva supporters started to worry along came Kevin Bouchier with a great run and popped a lovely pass to the inrushing Alan Barry who palmed the ball over the head of the advancing goalie to leave the winners 2-8 to 0-5 ahead. Both sides traded scores from there to the finish with 3 points each as Barry (19 min), Conal Sheridan (29min) and Jonathan McCabe ( 31 min) sealed a fantastic victory. Ballymachugh were gracious in their after match comments and wholeheartedly congratulated the Arva team. These sides have had many battles over the years but when the long whistle blows they always shake hands. It was a unique occasion as Thomas Brady climbed the steps of the stand to receive the Sean Leddy Cup from Tom Reilly, Chairman of Cavan County Board – something his father Vincent done in 1983 as Captain of the Arva Intermediate team. Arva team – Richard Keith, Cormac McCabe, James Morris, Shane Finnegan, Tomas Brady (Capt), Ciaran Brady, Paul Bouchier, Fergal Mc Glade (0-1), Cian Sheridan , Alan Barry (1-1), Kevin Bouchier, Peter Morris (0-1), Brian Ellis (1-0), Jonathan Mc Cabe (0-3), Conal Sheridan (0-5). Subs Stephen Ellis, Gavin Doyle, Conor Mc Entee, Brian Fitzpatrick. There were 13 other player in the panel who contributed so much to this win Sean Donnelly, Darren Gray, Sean Mc Manus, Shane McEntee, Paul Brady, Raymond Daly, Alan Gray, Enda Gormley, Danny Mc Entee, Ciaran Cooney, Raymond Brady, Danny Conneely and Ryan Magarahan (Injured). Both teams were treated to a beautiful meal by Cavan County Board in the Hotel Kilmore after which the bus headed to Arva. Bone fires greeted the Bus as it entered the town and they got a Garda Escort through the town thanks to Garda Dan O’Connell which added to the excitement. Because of the heavy rain the reception was moved from the Market Square to the Breffni Arms Hotel where a huge crowd welcomed them home. The club Chairman Niall Brady welcomed everyone and thanked Eamonn and Philomena for the use of the hotel at short notice and thanked everyone involved in this historic victory. A special word went to Ciaran Brady, Team Manager and his backroom team – Philip Galligan, Enda Boylan, Philip Brady, Brían Cully and Lisa Mulligan while the supporters themselves got great praise. The players were introduced to the supporters by Brían Ellis who has coached most of them since they were 8 years old – noting that there are 8 sets of brothers in the panel. No doubt the celebrations will continue for some time as 1993 was the last time Arva won this competition – as the song goes “21 years is a mighty long time”. The Sean Leddy Cup was brought to the local school and Crèche’s on Monday where they got a rapturous welcome from all the children.
