Renovations to St Brigid’s Church
Radical alterations to the sanctuary of St Brigid’s Church are envisaged as part of a planned renovation project. The proposed plans are currently on view in the church. On Tuesday, 27 May at 8pm there will be a public information session in the church at which the project architect and diocesan representatives will be present. St Brigid’s Church, designed by the renowned architect William Hague and completed in 1881, is a protected structure under Longford’s County Development Plan and is a wonderful spiritual and architectural asset not just for the heritage village of Ardagh but for the county as a whole. In 1981, the late Cardinal Cathal Daly, then Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnoise, wrote that “the church whose centenary we celebrate is one so distinguished architecturally and artistically…that the reasons for celebration are more than usually compelling.” Anyone interested in the conservation of St Brigid’s is urged to look at the plans and to attend the information session where the renovation proposals will be explained.
