First Holy Communion
On Sunday last in St. Michael’s Church, Bornacoola, Ryan Fanning, Patryk Maliki, Aaron Beirne, Evan Kilrane, Aaron Carney, Eimear Healy, Oisin Maguire, Eoghan Duignan, Emma Donelan, Grace Donlon, Riona Costello, Hannah Costello, Jolie Lyons, and Isabel Reynolds received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion. In a lovely ceremony administered by Fr Gerard O’Brien PP and assisted by mass servers Lauren McGarry and Jack Gannon the first communicants played an active part throughout the entire ceremony. Grace Donlon introduced the Gifts Procession at the start of mass which were carried by all the remaining communicants. The Liturgy of the Word was read by Riona Costello and Ryan Fanning. Prayers of the Faithful were read by Oisin Maguire, Aaron Carney, Aaron Beirne, Hannah Costello, Patryk Maliki, Eimear Healy, Eoghan Duignan, Evan Kilrane and Isabel Reynolds. Offertory Gifts were carried by Oisin Maguire, Patryk Maliki, Evan Kilrane, Aaron Beirne and Aaron Carney, Eimear Healy and Grace Donlon and the Sign of Peace was carried to the packed congregation by Jolie Lyons, Grace Donlon, Oisin Maguire and Eimear Healy. Emma Donnelan read the prayers before Communion and Jolie Lyons, Aaron Beirne and Isabel Reynolds read prayers after Communion. Eoghan Duignan delivered the Communion Reflection. In a procession to the Altar of Mary, flowers were carried by Hannah and Riona Costello. In what was a red letter day, the fourteen first communicants, the school choir, accompanied by organist Martina Hackett, sang the mass and soloists participating included Sarah Donelan, Chloe Donnelly, Oran Healy, Nyah Meldrum, Rebecca Banet, Aine Mulligan, Ellen Woods, Rachel McGarry, Eva Donlon and Odhran Grennan. Great credit is due to all participants of this ceremony and indeed to their teacher Patricia McGoldrick for all her advance preparatory work.
OpBORation Transformation continues with some healthy competition beginning to creep in. Weigh-in continues every Tuesday in the Community centre and this week local chief, Kevin Mallon will give a talk on healthy cooking around 8pm. The Saturday morning walks continue each week starting at 11am from the football pitch.
Well at this stage, the canvassing is pretty well done and dusted. All that remains for you who have a vote is to make sure you do go out and vote, it is your democratic right. I wish all candidates the best of luck.

Bornacoola U16s suffered a narrow defeat for the second week in a row as Gortletteragh claimed the spoils on Friday evening with a two point victory in a hugely entertaining game. For the second week in a row, four goals wasn’t quite enough for the young Bors as they lost by 4-10 to 4-8 with Robert O Beirne netting twice and Sean Riordan and Liam Jones also finding the net.
Bornacoola Seniors return to league action this Saturday as they host Ballinaglera in Dromod at 7pm. Our thanks to Drumreilly for providing a very useful challenge game last Friday. Bornacoola GAA Club has begun producing a quarterly newsletter – you can pick up the first copy for free in Hunts or O’Connor’s shops in Dromod. Copies are also available in the local churches. There will be a skills challenge for all club players under 18 will take place next Saturday morning at 11 am on the pitch. This will count towards the ongoing 100 hour challenge. All underage players must have paid their 10 euro registration fee for insurance purposes, so if you haven’t paid please bring it Saturday.
Annaduff beat the League leaders Drumkeeran in Division 4 at a wet Drumkeeran on Saturday by 1-6 to 0-7. This was an excellent performance, full of work rate and no little skill, played under very wet conditions. Cathal Cox opened the scoring with a point. Drumkeeran replied with three points in a row. Sean Duignan and Eoin Gill drew Annaduff level with points, with the home side getting two more points before the break to leave them leading by 0-5 to 0-3 at the break. Micheal O’Dowd’s men kept Drumkeeran to just two points in the second half scoring 1-3 themselves. Points from Ciaran McLoughlin, Sean Duignan (2) and a Suarez like goal from Dean Gill giving Annaduff a deserved win.
