After 32 years service in St Mary’s N.S, Padraig Flynn is retiring. We are having a retirement party on Sunday, 22nd June to celebrate Padraig work and dedication to the school. The committee members are calling to all the houses in the parish to hand out invitations for the event, from the 19th May, they will also give a envelope to each household and if people wish to make a donation towards the funding of the event they can do so at this time. It would be greatly appreciated. If there are people outside the parish who would like to make a donation they can send it into the school or give it to any committee member. The committee members are Betty Whitney, Geraldine Connnaughton, Margaret Beirne, Catherine Kelly, Sarah McNamara, Michael Manning, Sheila Lambden, Jennifer Gilmartin and Jennifer Evans. We are gathering photographs and stories about Padraig’s time in St Marys NS. If people have any old photos or stories they can drop them into the school or to any committee member. We are trying to contact as many people as possible who would have been connected with the school during Padraig;s time as Master. We are setting up a facebook group to try to help us let as many people as possible know about Padraig retirement.

Second award won was Person of the Year award which Vincent Maguire won last year for his work with the RCD and youth and sport development, this year our winner was Tommy Lambden for his work in the community involvement which was also a well deserved award, Tommy has given many years to the community and organised and overseen many functions and projects in the community for groups. Tommy’s mother, Maggie Lambden was also a winner in the environmental and heritage award for her work with Westmeath Archaeological and historical society. The third award and biggest win to date is that Rathowen Community Development are the county winners for the Pride of Place 2014, which means that the community goes on to represent Westmeath in the All Ireland competition in Clare in November. This is also well deserved award to the groups active in Rathowen, especially in the last 20 years when the RCD was created in 1994, the group along with other community groups helped rejuvenate the village.
