Anticipation is building in the local athletics and wider North Westmeath community, and beyond, for the forthcoming inaugural Easter Half Marathon on Easter Monday, April 21st, hosted and organised by Ringtown GAA Club. The event will start from Ringtown GAA Centre at Whitehall, Castlepollard, and will head out through Grangestown, Templanstown, around Old Kiltoom, back into Whitehall on the main Mullingar Road. The route will be covered once for the 10K route and twice for the Half Marathon. The event is a joint fundraiser for the Ringtown GAA Club and TEAM (Temporary Emergency Accommodation, Mullingar). The day will start with the 10k event departing at 11.00am, and the flagship Half Marathon starting at 11.15am, with registration for both events prior in Ringtown GAA Centre. Registration online withwww.precisiontiming.net will guarantee a free t-shirt. Entry fees are 15 euro for the 10K and 30 euro for the half marathon. The event has an AAI permit and there will be refreshments and shower facilities available in Ringtown GAA Centre following the event. Next Saturday night, March 15th, sees the eagerly awaited final of the North Westmeath Rose Competition taking place in Hotel Castlepollard, where 25 hopefuls, representing a cross section of clubs, retail businesses, organisations etc based in North Westmeath will vie for the title, and the opportunity to go forward to represent North Westmeath in the Westmeath Rose competition. The event starts at 8pm, and is being organised by the recently formed North Westmeath Community Network (NWCN). The winner of the competition will act as Grand Marshal at the North Westmeath St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Castlepollard on Monday, March 17th, starting at 5pm.
St Patrick’s Parade
All roads quite literally lead to Castlepollard on Monday next, March 17th, St. Patricks’s Day, for the North Westmeath St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which gets underway at 5pm. As part of the many events and attractions organised in the run-up to this year’s event, there will be the staging of the final of the North Westmeath Rose competition in Hotel Castlepollard, on Saturday, March 15, a Pig Roast in the Town & Country on Sunday, March 16th, raffle for a Television in Comaskey’s, a St. Patrick’s Day Walk from McCormack’s on March 17th and a Balloon Release on St. Patrick’s Day in aid of Motor Neuron Association. The theme of this year’s parade is “Legends”, and the sky is the limit in terms of imagination. There is an open invitation to anyone who wishes to enter a float, and the parade itself will form at St. Michael’s NS on Water Street and will follow the traditional route around the Square with the usual arrangements for walking groups. There will be entertainment on the Square from 2pm, with special emphasis on children’s entertainment.
Charity balloon release
A balloon release in aid of the Motor Neuron Association will take place on The Square, Castlepollard, on St.Patrick’s Day, March 17th, as part of the North Westmeath St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Sponsorship cards in are in circulation and a balloon can be sponsored for 2 euro, or three balloons for 5 euro. The balloon release will take place before the start of the parade at 5pm. All monies raised will be donated to the Motor Neurone Association. Your support will be greatly appreciated.
